Can Analogy Help Children Make Transitive Inference?

چکیده

This paper is exploring whether analogy-making as an early developing ability could potentially help children to develop deductive reasoning ability and in particular, transitive inference. Two experiments are presented. In the first one transitive mapping is explored further to make sure children at the age of 4 can do the transitive mapping task even when all three objects are hidden and no perceptual clues are available. After demonstrating that children can do that, the second experiment shows that the train analogy can help children correctly solve the transitive inference task. The empirical findings support Halford’s suggestions that deductive reasoning is being developed on the basis of children’s ability

Does Analogy Facilitate Transitive Inference in Young Children?

Both transitive reasoning and analogy-making are present at very early stage of human development and the question arises whether the two developmental trajectories interact with each other. We are presenting an experiment with 4 years old children to test the hypothesis that the analogymaking capabilities can scaffold and facilitate the development of transitive inference and the empirical dat...

Does the Family Analogy Help Young Children To Do Relational Mapping?

The experiment described in this paper tests the hypothesis that since the family is very familiar relational structure to even young children, the relational mapping between sets of objects will be significantly enhanced if children are invited to make an analogy with the family. This research is based on Gentner and Rattermann’s, and Goswami’s work in the same direction and tries to further e...

Monkey Errors in Transitive Inference

The ability to make transitive inference, (A > B) ∧ (B > C) ` A > C, occurs in many mammal species, given adequate training. Further, errors made by monkeys are quite similar to those made by 5-year-old children. This paper presents a model that learns transitive inference by acquiring and prioritizing sets of behavior rules linked to contexts. When correctly learned, the resulting system is id...

THE PERSON OR ORGANIZATION ORIGIN ATiN0 IT POINTS OF VIEW OR OPINIONS

Four to five-year-old children were asked questions on length involving single or double comparatives in a transitive inference task. The number of comparatives varied within or across pairs. The pairs of sticks were color-coded. Initial pair-wise discrimination training on four adjacent pairs from a five stick array with only verbal feedback was followed by tests, without feedback, on all poss...

Unchain My EL Reasoner

We study a restriction of the classification procedure for EL where the inference rule for complex role inclusion axioms (RIAs) is applied in a “left-linear” way in analogy with the well-known procedure for computing the transitive closure of a binary relation. We introduce a notion of left-admissibility for a set of RIAs, which specifies when a subset of RIAs can be used in a left-linear way w...
